Rum Kitchen – Soho & Brixton

This week, I tired rum-ting a little bit different! 🍹(Invite)

I’d never been to @therumkitchen before but when I heard they had a new plant based menu, I thought it was time to get involved 🌱 The the atmosphere and service were brilliant but I think the food needs a little work 🤔
Here’s what @jolley_chris and I tucked into and what we thought:
🌱 KFC – Krispy Fried Cauliflower with garlic sweet potato mash & tamarind aioli – The cauli & mash were tasty and the dip was bloomin’ delicious but for £8.50, I was expecting a much bigger portion. Felt like it was missing another component
🌱 Jacked Up Jerk Bowl with jerk spiced jackfruit, black rice, black eyed peas, pineapple & jerk gravy – The gravy was delicious and what was missing from most of the other dishes. It was spicy, sweet & smoky but it did slightly overpower the other flavours. I liked the sweetness from the pineapple and the combo of textures but would’ve liked a bit of crunch too
🌱 Creole Squash with chickpeas and coconut kale crisps – The squash was served in one chunky slab and I think, to absorb the flavours from the sauce, it would’ve been better in smaller pieces. The sauce was sweet but not as punchy as I’d hoped. The kale and coconut pieces were tasty but didn’t really fit with the dish
🌱 Winter Veg Curry with crispy cauliflower, chickpea squash with rice & peas – This was thick, comforting, creamy and had a sweet katsu like flavour. I liked the crunch from the coconut and the battered cauli but the flavours needed to be exaggerated and it needed a touch more heat 🔥
🌈 Jackfruit Rainbow Salad green mango & papaya, grapefruit with agave and ginger dressing – I was disappointed by this. The onion flavour was overwhelming. The jackfruit was tasty but the bitter grapefruit didn’t do it for me.
The lovely team were kind enough to invite me and gave me this food on a complimentary basis. No payment was received and all opinions, as always, are honest and my own.
