Vegan Advegtures: Ubud & Canggu – Bali

There’s only one word for Ubud & Canggu’s vegan scene: Un-bali-vable

Despite living in Australia for eleven years, I never made it to nearby Bali so this time, whilst I was on a trip visiting my family, I decided to tie in a visit to this beautiful island which I’ve heard so many great things about. I’d been told by many people that this is a vegan’s paradise and boy, were they right! Not only are there a wealth of vegan restaurants, almost every restaurant you see offers vegan options and they’re all made from natural ingredients.

We decided to base ourselves in an Airbnb for a few days in Ubud before heading to another Airbnb in Canggu for the rest of the trip. We found the accommodation to be very reasonably priced and the food and transport were also very affordable.

We walked a lot while we were here but found that lots of the places we wanted to go to were quite far apart. The cheapest and quickest way to get around is by renting a moped. If you don’t fancy hopping on one, there are lots of taxis available on most streets.

Here’s the list of places we visited:

Jl. Hanoman No.44B, Ubud, Kecamatan Ubud, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80571, Indonesia

Is it 100% vegan?

No but they have vegan options

What’s it like?

A cute, cosy cafe with chilled vibes and a huge menu. This is an organically inspired cafe serving anything from nachos to Thai curries. The food was ok but nothing special. We all felt that our dishes were lacking flavour.

  • Rice paper rolls

4. Mozaic

Where is it?

Jl. Raya Sanggingan, Kedewatan, Kecamatan Ubud, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80571, Indonesia

Is it 100% vegan?

No but they have vegan options

What’s it like?

Potentially the fanciest restaurant in Ubud, this fine-dining venue is absolutely beautiful in every way. We sat in the fairy light filled garden, surrounded by the sounds of Balinese wildlife. It’s not cheap but you get what you pay for – definitely one for a special occasion!

What to order:

  • Tasting menu

5. Moksa

Where is it?

Jalan Puskesmas Ubud II Kutuh, Sayan, Kecamatan Ubud, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80571, Indonesia

Is it 100% vegan?

Yes

What’s it like?

An adorable little restaurant set outside of the main town. Whilst quite unassuming at first, you soon feel very comfortable in this peaceful, spacious, laid back restaurant. They serve both raw and cooked vegan foods with a farm to table concept. This was definitely some of the best food we ate in Bali.

What to order:

  • Kale tofu scramble

This is such a fantastic restaurant! 100% organic and 100% vegan, Zest’s decor is stunning, the grounds it sits in are beautiful and the food is excellent. What more could you want? The menu is huge and varied but all of the dishes we had were executed really well.

7. Locavore

Where is it?

9C Jalan Dewi Sita, Ubud, Bali, Indonesia

Is it 100% vegan?

Another pricey dining experience, Locavore is small and cosy, refined yet fun. Everything here is a little bit quirky and experimental, so expect the tasting menu to take you on a culinary adventure.

8. Earth Cafe

Where is it?

Jl. Goutama Sel., Ubud, Kecamatan Ubud, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80571, Indonesia

Is it 100% vegan?

Yes

What’s it like?

This is a casual restaurant with a balcony overlooking one of Ubud’s side streets. They offer a range of dishes from various cuisines but unfortunately we weren’t impressed with any of the ones we ordered and ended up leaving our food because it was all flavourless. Such a shame as we’d read great things about this place but for us, the food just wasn’t up to scratch. The man who worked there was lovely but one of the women who served us was particularly unwelcoming.

What to order:

  • Sadly, we didn’t enjoy any of our dishes. Perhaps we ordered the wrong things!

9. Clear Cafe

Where is it?

Jl. Hanoman No.8, Ubud, Kecamatan Ubud, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80571, Indonesia

Is it 100% vegan?

No but they have vegan options

What’s it like?

This is a beautiful restaurant! You enter through a circular wooden door and once inside, you’re greeted by water fountains and plants. We visited for breakfast and whilst the vegan menu wasn’t huge, the dishes they did have were quite tasty.

What to order:

  • Tofu scramble

Jl. Raya Tegallalang No.57-58, Tegallalang, Kec. Tegallalang, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80561, Indonesia

Is it 100% vegan?

Yes

What’s it like?

We stumbled upon this restaurant purely by accident after a day exploring the swings and waterfalls Ubud had to offer. This easily has the best views of any of the restaurants we visited during our trip. Overlooking a beautiful rice terrace, this fully vegan restaurant served up some of the best food we had on our whole trip! You can get anything from a tempeh sandwich to a lasagne.

What to order:

  • Burrito
  • Potato croquettes

More information:

Check out their website

What’s it like?

This is a gorgeous restaurant with clean, white interiors but a homely, cosy feel to it. We visited for breakfast and thought it was the perfect way to wake up in the morning. The breakfast options ranged from pancakes to scrambles and it was all really tasty!

  • Breakfast burrito
  • Breakfast sandwich

11. Kismet

Jl. Goutama Sel. No.27X, Ubud, Kecamatan Ubud, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80571, Indonesia

Is it 100% vegan?

No but they have vegan options

What’s it like?

I was told that no matter what, I had to visit Kismet to taste their vegan chicken. So, despite having a packed itinerary, we squeezed this into our trip on our way to Canggu. The restaurant itself is quite small but has a trendy, relaxed vibe to it. The vegan menu isn’t extensive but the “chicken” was very good!

What to order:

  • Vegan chicken (not the burger as it has mayo)

Check out their Instagram

Canggu

1. Peleton Supershop

Jl. Pantai Berawa No.46, Tibubeneng, Kec. Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80361, Indonesia

Is it 100% vegan?

Yes

What’s it like?

The first and easily one of the best places we visited in Canggu. This is a modern, airy, casual cafe with a biking theme, serving great food! We visited for breakfast and we all really enjoyed our meals. The food is all natural and health focused without compromising on flavour.

What to order:

  • Pancakes
  • Burrito
  • Smoothie bowl

More information:

Check out their Instagram

2. Green Ginger Noodle House

Where is it?

Jl. Raya Pantai berawa No. 46A, Banjar Pelambingan, Kuta Utara, Tibubeneng, Kec. Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80361, Indonesia

Is it 100% vegan?

No, vegetarian

What’s it like?

This tiny, cosy little restaurant serves all veggie (and many vegan) South-east Asian dishes. We sat outside during a tropical storm and listened to the rain beat down on the tin roof above us. The food was really tasty and the staff were all lovely.

What to order:

  • Pad Thai
  • Soup
  • Tofu cups

More information:

Check out their Instagram

3. Shady Shack

Where is it?

Jl. Tanah Barak No.57, Canggu, Kec. Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80351, Indonesia

Is it 100% vegan?

No, vegetarian

What’s it like?

One of the better known and therefore busier spots in Canggu, this venue was absolutely packed when we visited but because it’s such a big restaurant, it didn’t feel overcrowded or overly busy. The reason it’s so popular is because the food is great! You can order anything from a burger to a salad or sip on a refreshing smoothie.

What to order:

  • Nori bowl
  • Vegan cheeseburger

More information:

Check out their Instagram

4. Give Cafe

Where is it?

Jl. Padanglinjong No.85, Canggu, Kec. Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80351, Indonesia

Is it 100% vegan?

Yes

What’s it like?

This is such a great little spot! With rainbow coloured walls and Instagram friendly dishes, this vegan institution is a must-visit on your trip. We visited for breakfast where we had a choice of pancakes, French toast, corn fritter stacks and smoothie bowls.

What to order:

  • Breakfast burger
  • Smoothie bowl

More information:

Check out their Instagram

5. Oma Jamu

Where is it?

Front of Pura Puseh, Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong No.46a, Canggu, Kec. Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80361, Indonesia

Is it 100% vegan?

Yes

What’s it like?

This is a great little find. This restaurant offers a menu full of Indonesian dishes but also boasts an impressive (and very affordable) buffet. The venue is very chilled and is the kind of place you could sit all day relaxing whilst working your way through their huge food offering.

What to order:

  • Buffet

More information:

Check out their Instagram

6. Betelnut Cafe

Where is it?

Pantai Batu Bolong St No.60, Canggu, North Kuta, Badung Regency, Bali 80351, Indonesia

Is it 100% vegan?

No but they have vegan options

What’s it like?

Offering predominantly Indonesian and Mexican food, there aren’t tonnes of vegan options on the menu but there are a few! We were seated inside downstairs rather than upstairs because it was so busy. The food was tasty but not the best we had on the trip.

What to order:

  • Tofu summer roll
  • Vegetable curry

More information:

Check out their Instagram

7. Living Food Lab

Where is it?

No 8, Canggu Square units 12-13, Canggu, Jl. Pantai Berawa, Tibubeneng, Kec. Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80361, Indonesia

Is it 100% vegan?

Yes

What’s it like?

This is a bright, airy, spacious venue with a focus on healthy, eco friendly food. The food was nice enough but not amazing and the service wasn’t brilliant. We waited for twenty minutes to be told that the dishes we’d ordered weren’t available and all of our meals arrived at different times so that none of us were able to eat at the same time. The staff were friendly and the venue was nice but this wasn’t our best experience in Bali.

What to order:

  • Mango rolls
  • Gado Gado

More information:

Check out their Instagram

8. Vinny’s Warung

Where is it?

Pantai Batu Bolong St No.37, Canggu, North Kuta, Badung Regency, Bali 80361, Indonesia

Is it 100% vegan?

Yes

What’s it like?

We didn’t have the best experience at Vinny’s. We waited almost forty minutes at the restaurant for our takeaway order and none of us enjoyed our food. We discussed our issues with the team after and they informed us that they were having some issues that night and that their Indonesian dishes are stronger than their other dishes so I’d recommend ordering them if you visit.

What to order:

  • One of the traditionally Indonesian dishes

More information:

Check out their Instagram

9. I Am Vegan Babe

Where is it?

Jl. Tanah Barak No.49, Canggu, Kec. Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80351, Indonesia

Is it 100% vegan?

Yes (no surprises there!)

What’s it like?

Easily one of the best experiences of our entire trip! The restaurant itself is beautiful, the food is absolutely delicious and the service is great too. They offer a range of dishes including club sandwiches, Mexican inspired dishes, smoothie bowls salads.

What to order:

  • Shrimp salad
  •  Burrito
  • Club sandwich

More information:

Check out their Instagram

10. Plant Cartel

Where is it?

Canggu, North Kuta, Badung Regency, Bali, Indonesia

Is it 100% vegan?

Yes

What’s it like?

The only fully vegan burger joint in Canggu (that I know of), this is the place to go if you want a junk food hit. The decor is bright and colourful and the menu offers a range of comfort foods including meatball subs, hotdogs, macaroni “cheese” and a range of desserts and milkshakes. We found all of the food a little too salty but good for a burger hit nonetheless.

What to order:

  • Chicken burger

More information:

Check out their Instagram

11. Manggis in Canggu

*This meal was complimentary

Where is it?

Jl. Pemelisan Agung No.7, Tibubeneng, Kec. Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80361, Indonesia

Is it 100% vegan?

No, vegetarian

What’s it like?

While we were in Bali, these guys invited us in to taste their vegan offering and I’m glad they did. The setting is so pretty and the food was tasty too. We sat outside and befriended the local dog who has made himself at home there. The service was also great – everyone was super friendly. The food could’ve had bolder flavours but it was still tasty.

What to order:

  • Tofu hollandaise
  • Pancakes

More information:

Check out their Instagram

12. Bali Buda

Where is it?

Canggu, North Kuta, Badung Regency, Bali 80351, Indonesia

Is it 100% vegan?

No but they have vegan options

What’s it like?

We popped in here but there weren’t many vegan options so we ended up just having some drinks and some small snacks between us. It’s a cute space but would’ve loved to see more of a range of vegan options.

What to order:

  • Fresh spring rolls

More information:

Check out their Instagram

13. Kynd Community

Where is it?

Jalan Petitenget No.12 Kerobokan Kelod, Seminyak, Kec. Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung, Bali 80361, Indonesia

Is it 100% vegan?

Yes

What’s it like?

This venue isn’t specifically in Canggu, it’s in Kuta so we popped in here on our way to the airport. This is part of the same group as Give Cafe which we loved! It’s clearly been designed to be plastered all over people’s Instagram feeds so it’s colourful and cute. The food is all very photo-worthy and is tasty too.

What to order:

  • Kind Big Mac
  • Schnitzel burger
  • Burrito

More information:

Check out their Instagram

I hope that this blog post has helped you understand the vegan scene in Ubud and Canggu a little better.

These are just some of the places we visited. Obviously there are lots of other places offering vegan options. We’d also have loved to visit…  to name a few.
