Vegan Advegtures: Prague, Czech Republic

Last month, I thought it was about time to “Czech” out the vegan delights Prague has to offer.

Prague is such an adorable city. It’s set on a river and is an old city with beautiful architecture and cobbled streets. It was evident pretty quickly that this is a city steeped in tradition so I’ll admit I was a little unsure what their vegan offering would be like, but I was pleasantly surprised. I would say that the vegan options at omni restaurants are lacking but that there are a few vegan restaurants scattered across the city which are worth a visit!

Again, this was another two day trip where we tried to squeeze as many restaurants into our itinerary and food into our stomach as possible!

I received some recommendations from the Instagram community on where to eat and decided to visit the ones which received the most votes! There are more which we didn’t get the chance to visit on this occasion but I’m sure we’ll be back to visit them one day!

Here’s the list of places we visited in the order we visited them:

🌱 Forky’s

🌱 Maitrea

🌱 Moment’s Cafe

🌱 Pastva

🌱 Loving Hut

🌱 Country Life

So, down to the nitty gritty. Here’s what we ate and what we thought:

1. Forky’s

** Disclaimer – My meal was complimentary but all views are honest and my own

Where is it?

Veleslavínova 93/10, 110 00 Josefov, Czechia

What’s it like?

Forky’s is a casual bistro cafe style venue with relaxed vibes. It’s 100% vegan and all of their packaging is 100% bio-degradable for all takeaway meals. There’s lots of seating and the staff are friendly and helpful.

What did you eat?

  • Nofish & Chips – Fried tofu with wakame seaweed, Tamara, turmeric, sesame seeds & dill with sweet potato & potato fries – 139Kč (£4.50)
  • French Burger – Sweet & sour red onion chutney with thyme, dijon mustard & lamb’s lettuce – 167Kč (£5.50)

What did you think of the food?

  • Nofish & Chips – This wasn’t very much like fish at all. It was more like a seaweed and dill omelette. Whilst it wasn’t supposed to be, the texture was very similar to that of eggs! It mainly just tasted like dill and was a little bit sweet
  • French Burger – This is such an unusual burger! The stand out flavour is the onions so it’s quite sweet. The patty flavour isn’t very strong and I would say that it’s more there for texture and substance. I enjoyed it but thought that cheese might have been a good addition to give it a bit more depth.

2.Maitrea

Where is it?

Týnská ulička 1064/6, 110 00 Josefov, Czechia

What’s it like?

This is a vegetarian restaurant with a good amount of vegan options. It’s a big place with plenty of seating but it feels cosy. It was absolutely packed when we visited and there’s a buzzy atmosphere. It’s quite informal and relaxed. The labelling on the menu is brilliant and includes information on meals which contain honey / are vegan / are gluten free / contain onion / contain garlic etc.

What did you eat?

  • “Tofoie Gras” – Pate made using smoked tofu, barley miso & cashew served with cranberries and toasted bread (pictured on the right) – 110Kč (£3.60)
  • Spicy goulash with vegan soya pieces, served with wholewheat dumplings or baked potatoes (we chose the potatoes) (pictured on the left) – 220Kč  (£7.30)
  • Paella a la Maitrea with sun-dried tomatoes, champignons, shiitake mushrooms, onions, stir-fry sauce, diced soy chicken (and parmesan which is omitted for the vegan option)  – 225Kč (£7.50)

What did you think of the food?

  • “Tofoie Gras” – It’s not bad, I liked the sweet jam but was hoping for a stronger flavour
  • Spicy goulash – I really liked the texture but it was a bit too salty for me. The seitan reminded me of lamb in that in melted in my mouth. The sauce was quite rich and there was perhaps a bit too much sauce for the dish but I did enjoy it. Perhaps it needed a few more potatoes to soak up that sauce!
  • Paella a la Maitrea – I must say, this didn’t really remind me of a paella at all. It was more like fried rice and needed much more flavour

3. Moment’s Cafe

** Disclaimer – My meal was complimentary but all views are honest and my own

Where is it?

Slezská 62, 120 00 Vinohrady, Czechia

What’s it like?

This is a trendy little cafe serving up 100% vegan goodness. It has a nice, casual feel to it. The staff were absolutely lovely and the cafe was full of Saturday morning brunchers.

What did you eat?

  • Vegan, gluten free omelette made from chickpea flour with potatoes, mushrooms, onions, kale & tomatoes – 130Kč (£4.30)
  • Tofu scrambled eggs with homemade bread, oyster mushrooms & sausage – 135Kč (£4.50)
  • Pancakes with whipped cream, chocolate & fresh fruit (gluten free) – 130Kč (£4.30)

What did you think of the food?

  • Omelette – This had potential but it was too thick and that eggy omelette flavour was there but too subtle. It was more like a savoury pancake as it was quite doughy. I would’ve loved more filling as the mushrooms were great when you got to them!
  • Tofu scrambled eggs – The flavours in the scrambled eggs were beauuuutiful. The sausage was great too, they reminded me of taifun tofu weiners
  • Pancakes – Sadly these didn’t really do it for me. The choc buttons were tasty but they were a little bland and needed more filling. The cream was amazing though!

4. Pastva

Where is it?

Nádražní 54/102, Anděl, 150 00 Praha 5-Smíchov, Czechia

What’s it like?

Adooooorable. Loved the vibes here! Super chilled, Scandi decor and a great atmosphere. My favourite place of the whole trip.

What did you eat?

  • Vegan Foie Gras with criminology mushrooms, walnuts, onion jam & homemade bread – 120Kč (£4.00)
  • Lasagne with homemade semolina pasta, bolognese sauce, black lentils & spinach – 210Kč (£7.00)
  • Sweet potato curry with carrots, red onions, coriander, lemongrass, tofu & rice – 195Kč (£6.50)

What did you think of the food?

  • Vegan Foie Gras – This was the best “foie gras” of the trip. It packed some lovely flavours and the onion chutney was delicious! Great texture too.
  • Lasagne – Unreal. Just SO GOOD. I think this might be the best vegan lasagne I’ve ever had! It had a lovely sweetness to it and the layer of spinach was incredible. The lentils gave it some substance and the pasta was perfectly cooked. Despite being full, I could’ve eaten two more quite easily!
  • Sweet potato curry – Oh yes! A thick, rich creamy sauce which left a slight heat at the back of the throat. Packed with fresh veggies and a generous portion size. I’d definitely recommend this dish too!

5. Loving Hut

Where is it?

Jungmannova 738/18, 110 00 Nové Město, Czechia

What’s it like?

We weren’t expecting much as this was a quick stop for dinner as the venue we had originally planned to visit was fully booked. It’s a basic, casual, takeaway restaurant with a few seats, no music and very quiet. It was almost empty when we visited.

What did you eat?

  • Sea slices – Breaded soya slices wrapped with seaweed, tomato sauce, dill & served with jasmine rice – 155Kč (£5)
  • Kung Pao – Spicy kung par sauce with red bell peppers, cabbage, ginger, cashew nuts & served with jasmine rice – 155Kč (£5)

What did you think of the food?

  • Sea slices – These weren’t particularly fishy and were perhaps a little soggy but I quite liked the tomato sauce they came with.
  • Kung Pao – This had a bit more of a kick to it and I loved the ginger & cashew nuts. Both dishes were alright but nothing special

6. Country Life

Where is it?

Melantrichova 463/15, 110 00 Staré Město, Czechia

What’s it like?

Super chilled buffet style restaurant with plenty of seating. They’ve got a range of cold and hot food available and the queue moves quickly!

What did you eat?

  • Chris and I both piled up a plate each with a variety of food including pasta dishes, potato dishes, veggie curries & fresh veggies all for approx £5 each

What did you think of the food?

  • All of the food was fresh and there was a good variety. The curry was a little watery but I really enjoyed the pasta dishes. All in all, great value for money and I’d definitely go back!
