Wine makes me merry and I’m told ‘tis the season for that 🍷💁🏼♀️ {ad}
As I’m sure many of you know, not all wines are vegan 😭🌱 Don’t worry, you don’t need to give up grapes 🍇 It’s actually the clarifying and fining process where the issue occurs.
Fining removes unwanted material from wines to stop it looking hazy or affecting the aroma, colour or taste, and it usually involves casein (a milk protein), egg whites, gelatin (animal protein) or isinglass (fish bladder protein) 🐟
But DO NOT FEAR, wine lovers, because companies like @purato_sicilia exist 🍷♥️
Their wines are, of course, vegan, but they’re also organic, eco-friendly and sustainable – the wines themselves are carbon-neutral and packaged in recycled and recyclable materials ♻️ They’re also authentic Sicilian wines so you *know* they’re going to be good 🍷🇮🇹
The three wines @purato_sicilia sent me to try were:
🍷 Catarratto Pinot Grigio
Made with grapes from organic vineyards in the Trapani area. This is an authentic Sicilain white with tropical notes and hints of citrus.
🍝 Perfect with a pasta dish e.g. spaghetti primavera
🍷 Nero D’Avola
Made with grapes grown in organic vineyards on hillside slopes in the Trapani area of the island. This is an authentic Sicilian red packed with punchy fruit
🍝 Perfect with a tomato-based pasta dish
🍷 Siccari Appassimento
Made with grapes grown in South East Sicily. The name Siccari comes from “seccare” meaning “to dry” became a proportion of the grapes are sun-dried before vinification. This gives the wine a rich, complex structure with very soft berryish fruits and a touch of spice
🍝 Pairs well with pasta, vegetables, “cheese”, “meat”
For me, a roast isn’t complete without a nice glass of red🍷 So, there was only one dish I wanted to pair the Appassimento with. I cooked up some crispy thyme and rosemary oyster mushrooms, crispy garlic roasties, Yorkshire puddings, creamy cauliflower cheese, sweet honey glazed carrots, “pigs” in blankets, green beans and tenderstem broccoli ☺️
If you want to pick up some of the wines for yourself, you can grab them on @ocadouk 🍷
